Hey everyone! Sorry it’s been awhile since updating, soooo much has been going on in my life, both personally and professionally. So rather than give you the month by month and drag out updates for 2011 into 2012 at this pace, here’s the short of it.
May was a busy month for me, I worked on a number of great projects, including a CBS promo for their fall lineup with a focus on Blue Bloods. We shot for a couple days in NYC, day one in and around Manhattan at various landmark locations. The second day was spent on a massive green in a studio doing shots of Eddie Going, our superb Tom Selleck stand-in hanging from a helicopter ladder “flying” around the city.

Peter Mariuzza lines up his shot in Manhattan, look out for the helicopter! (added in post later)

A stunt driver flies past the Ed Sullivan Theater in Manhattan to deliver a time sensitive document in this promo

Eddie is hanging out on the rope ladder imagining he's dangling hundreds of feet above NYC, don't look down!

Eddie puts on his Tom Selleck face so the vfx guys can put Tom Selleck's face on Eddie in post.
I also worked on a promotional spot for Porsche through the History Channel. We got to rock out first on a car trailer on day one, then we got to play the lead vehicle with a 40 ft jib attached while we got great driving footage of the new Porsche Carrera on day two.

On the Camera Car hanging with the 1200 HMI cruising around town.

Tony Grazia and the gang from my POV on the trailer pulling our camera car.

Setting everything up to go for a ride towing around our $100,000 prop car

Setting everything up in the morning. Day Two involved letting the Porsche loose on the roads while Peter Mariuzza got to play around with the jib to get some great stuff.
Mixed into May was also a couple of commercials for such products as Lipoflavonoid (say that five times fast) and Stopain for the folks at DEG, an internet spot for Salesforce.com of a true Lego Maniac, a few days with the folks at Concepts on some new infomercials, and some medical interviews and event coverage for stock as they are repeat customers

Showing off a demo of how the GripStic works, this was a product I'd totally buy, worked great!
Jumping into June, fairly quiet for production, more pre-production and planning than anything. A couple more days with the folks from Concepts on some infomercials, and a lot of pre-production work on the educational and parenting tool Practical Goals, which is still in pre-production purgatory (better, faster, cheaper – pick any two, but you can’t have all three) so that should be shooting by the end of the year.
Moving into July, I continued my work with the folks at Concepts as well as working on some Corporate video fun shooting interviews and b-roll for the Watervliet Arsenal in response to the state’s backing the Arsenal by providing it a huge grant for expansion. The Watervliet Arsenal is responsible for contributing MANY things to our society and specifically our armed forces including the armor plating that goes on the military humvees. I also worked on an educational video for the folks at Human Relations Media on the value and importance of reputation for a young adolescent in middle and high school. That was quite the experience working with new people, I enjoyed it thoroughly and look forward to working with them again.

Some interviews with folks involved with the Arsenal discussing how important the Arsenal is and how key it was for NY to provide the grant for them to expand.

An interview with NYS Assemblyman Ron Canestrari about the state's involvement in expanding the Watervliet Arsenal.

Setting up for real people to check out and try Furniture Fix on this saggy old lumpy couch we set up in the mall.

Going through the motions prior to a take for the "negative" reputation scene with one of our "delinquent" students
In July, I also re-teamed with the folks at Galileo Media Arts to produce a new 30 second spot for Nemer Volkswagen here in the Capital District which will be posted on my Commercials page in conjunction with this post publishing so head on over and check that out. July closed out with a flurry of spots for Concepts as well as the early tinkerings on a longer term project developing media for a prominent funeral director in the Hudson Valley region which involves footage of the changing of seasons, nature, tranquility, the symbolic nature of sunsets and time changing nature, basically an excuse to shoot some really beautiful stuff, which is what I enjoy doing, making pretty pictures.
August was the meat and potatoes of my update. In July, I began post-production work as the Editor and Color Correctionist on the Edgar Allen Poe inspired short film “Her Telling Heart”, written and directed by Heidi Philipsen. While working closely with Heidi on the project, she had begun negotiations to be the production coordinator on a feature film coming to the area and they were in search of a Director of Photography. Heidi recommended me and through a series of interviews, meetings, and a lot of cheerleading on behalf of Heidi and the Unit Production Manager Nunzio Fazio, I successfully landed the role of Director of Photography on the feature film “Love Orchard”, starring Kristanna Loken, Bruce Dern, Ian Duncan, Patricia De Leon, Jose Maria Yazpik, Leigh Strimbeck, and number of other incredibly talented actors. The film is directed by award-winning Director Farhad Mann. Having already shot the second unit footage in LA and Arizona with acclaimed Director of Photography David Herrington, I had a lot to live up to.

My talented "A" Cam Operator and good friend Sam "Star Fox" Gove manning the RED MX with a sweet Angenieux 25-250mm zoom lens on it on Day One of production.

Director Farhad Mann looks on the monitor as we prep for a take in the courthouse with Bruce Dern, Leigh Strimbeck, Patricia De Leon, and Jose Maria watching the proceedings of the case.
I was blessed to have such an opportunity, as they could have easily gone with someone from NYC or LA, but I was fortunate enough and worked hard enough to earn the respect and confidence of the powers that be to be hired on as the Director of Photography.

Some two camera action with our talented camera department.

Me taking a look outside to track the setting sun to get our shots in before daylight runs out.

Checking out the monitor in a nice comfy armchair, soooo much better than an apple box
With our aggressive 15 day shooting schedule to shoot over 90 pages of the 113 page script, we got to work. I began pre-production for my end of things August 1st and we were starting principal photography on August 6th, tackling the meat of the film first, the courtroom scenes that accounted for 37 1/2 pages of the script with four days to complete it in. We plowed through, getting some incredible shots and performances by all parties involved, which included local favorites Kevin Craig West, Mark Musto, Michael Hayes, and others.

Going over the scene and screen direction with Farhad and our lead, Ms. Kristanna Loken.

Getting ready to shoot the master shot for an outdoor scene involving a lot of extras choreographed to swarm our talent.

Coffee in hand, ready for the day, waiting for the sun to rise over some obstructions for optimal key light.

Running some source light from about 20-30 ft. in the air is always fun, supervising that no one dies lol
At the conclusion of our 15 day schedule, we left nothing behind, got everything in the can, except for some minor second unit pick up shots, and we have a real winner I feel. It’s the little Indie that could I think and I will be sure to keep you all up to date as it proceeds through post-production, which includes me going to LA to sit with Farhad Mann and the color correctionist, whom also color corrected The Dark Knight, for two weeks to really give it my personal touch. I am extremely excited to be given such an opportunity to carry on in the process after wrap and see it through like a real Director of Photography gets the chance to do on a regular basis on larger pictures like this one.

Director Farhad Mann and I watch a camera rehearsal at the Inn at Hudson.

Some hands on work from Director Farhad Mann, shouldering up the 45 lb RED MX for some handheld action during a paparazzi scrum.

Overseeing the hoisting of our "street lamp" outside our restaurant for some nice added color, the light would be gelled to match a sodium vapor street light.

Unfortunately, the real moon is on the other side of the house, so using a couple 1200 HMIs, we will create our moon. Checking the heat of it to see if I have to make Gaffer Chris Bauer's day worse by having him fire up the Genny to run 4K HMIs or not.
I also want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank my amazing crew, whom all busted their asses for those 15 days and more to help us bring together such a great film. Farhad Mann, Nunzio Fazio, Jim Whitworth, Kevin Moon, Heidi Philipsen, Montana Mann, Sam Gove, Patrick Elliott, Chuck Grady, Adam Richlin, Kevin Barry, Victor Trejo, Seamus Donahoe, Evalena Ritland, Rebecca Gold, The Hester Sisters (Kris, Jessica, and Meagan), Jason Milani, Tabatha Beshears, Brent Singleton, Shawn Tiano, Joe Hedge, Matt Van Gelder, Dee Dee Thomas, Chris Bauer, Matt Kessler, John Hudak, Rachel Saltzman, Jennifer Gonyea, Ananda Strazzini, Josh Litton, Tim Scott, Jessica Farkas, Candace Coons, Donna Gagnon, Joe James, Lisa Carlson, Mike Kane, Gaby Allen, Clayton and Steve the power sound duo, and so so so many others, you were all absolutely fantastic and it was a pleasure working with each and every one of you and I sincerely hope to do it again soon and often.

Just some of our wonderful cast and crew attending an evening with Bruce Dern, what great stories he has.

A little goofing around after wrap on the last day, I autographed our own Jen Gonyea, leaving my mark on her forever, both mentally and now physically.

Some classic Chris Bauer antics, when people say he's a blank slate, he is, or at least his shirts are. A new day always brought a new white shirt and a new Bauer Power statement. Vive la France!

The man himself, Mr. Bruce Dern and I during some down time on set. What a great guy, really hope to work with him again. I've been "ordered" to pay him a visit while in LA in November, yes sir, with pleasure.

The lovely and talented Kristanna Loken and I following her picture wrap on the last day of production. She was a pleasure to work with and light, it was honestly impossible to poorly light her, even when it was necessary to make her look bad, it proved to be a significant challenge, she is naturally an incredibly photogenic person.

Following his picture wrap, the talented and friendly Ian Duncan and I pose for a photo. Wonderful actor, looking forward to more from him soon.
Moving ahead into September, where we are now, was my next major life change. On September 3rd, 2011, I married the love of my life, the mother of our beautiful daughter, and my best friend (yes they’re all the same person), Tiffani Jansen. We had a small ceremony with immediate family and went to Atlantic City for four days and three nights for our “honeymoon”. We were supposed to be in Las Vegas for 12 days, 11 nights back in August, but then I was offered “Love Orchard” and had to make a change of plans. We are doing a Save the Date for next year to renew our vows and have a full blown ceremony and reception.

Following our small ceremony, the principal party people posed for a picture. (L to R Maid of Honor Summer Miller, my beautiful bride Tiffani (Jansen) Schaffer, myself, and my Best Man Andrew Zych.

Our sweet little girl Lily trying some sweet cake frosting at Mommy and Daddy's wedding. Aunt Trisha was there to make sure we didn't spoil our dinner.
Following that, like the very next day upon returning from our honeymoon, I was back to work, doing pre-production for Simple Three, a parenting tool, for which we were shooting two 15 minute infomercials for to be included on a DVD with the product when it’s ordered. The two-day shoot went well and I will begin post-production on that beginning next week. After that I continued doing work for National Grid, filming their relief and recovery efforts following the tragic events of Hurricane Irene and the Tornado the followed, tearing through most of the Hudson and Mohawk Valley. It was very sobering to see just how many people lost everything, but also very uplifting to see how so may who lost so much have kept their spirits high and continue to see the glass as half full. The speed at which services and the basic life essentials are being restored to those affected has been amazing, hats off to the efforts of National Grid and all those working towards a return to normalcy.
That’s it for now, on the horizon for me this month are some more dates with the folks at Concepts, as well as a trip to Pennsylvania to do a shoot for Applebee’s for the History Channel, as well as shooting the pilot for a new drama with a twist from talented writer-director Mike Feurstein, whom I shot the highly successfully sci-fi web series “eScape” for. Further out on the horizon, I am in talks right now to travel to Nigeria to shoot a feature film in or around November, after their heavy rain season passes, so I will keep you all up to date on that as well.
So until next time – Stay healthy, stay happy, and stay busy! Cheers!
